Six Flags Log Flume Accident

Six Flags Great Adventure located in Jackson, New Jersey is a very popular attraction for people in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Six Flags provides fun activities for the whole family to enjoy, and you trust that it will be safe. But some damaged railing on the log flume led to 2 riders with injuries.

Saw Mill Log Flume Ride

The log flume is a popular ride at many theme parks. Six Flags in New Jersey is no different. The Saw Mill seats up to four guests in a log-shaped cart and lifts them up to four stories high before rushing down a steep slope. With water rushing down the sides, the ride splashes riders all over. This is perfect for cooling down on a hot day. However, the ride was not so perfect for riders on June 14th, 2021.

Log Flume Injury At Six Flags

On June 14th, the log flume ride at Six Flags had a broken rail. Poor maintenance and safety checks led to injuring riders. Video evidence shows that as one of the carts were coming down the slope, the guard rail that is meant to keep the cart on track was broken. Comments in several video posts report seeing this damaged railing days before the incident.

Broken Railing Injures Riders

The broken railing jolts riders as they come around a sharp bend in the track. Soon after the video ends, one cart was stuck on the broken railing. The next cart crashed into the cart stuck on the railing. Two guests were taken to a local hospital with injuries. No fatalities occurred, just injuries. But it could have been worse.

Video shows investigation of the crashed log flume carts.

Amusement Park Accidents

This story is chilling when you think about the damage that could have been done. There are about 30,000 amusement park injuries that occur each year. Though deaths are less common, from 1990-2004 there were 52 deaths associated with amusement park accidents recorded. When you go to an amusement park for a day of fun with family or friends, you do not expect someone in your group to end up injured or worse.

Preventing Theme Park Injuries

What can be done to prevent these accidents from happening, and who is responsible when injuries happen? It is the responsibility of the amusement park to make sure that everything is safe for guests. This includes all machinery for the rides as well as the grounds of the park.

There are a few different types of accidents that may occur at an amusement park. Common incidents where the theme park may be liable include:

  • unsafe walking conditions
  • ride injury
  • bad lighting
  • broken benches/seating
  • lack of safety instructions and warnings
  • improper security

Depending on the circumstances of your injury, a variety of entities may be responsible. If you were injured as a result of a faulty ride, liability may fall upon:

  • theme park
  • maintenance contractors
  • safety inspectors
  • ride designer and/or manufacturer
