Ferring Nasal Spray Recall
Nasal sprays manufactured by Ferring Pharmaceuticals are on recall, according to the FDA. The reason? High levels of desmopressin in several nasal spray products.
Patients using a nasal spray in this recall should contact their doctor for a replacement prescription. Do not stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor. Check the recall list on the FDA website.
Ferring Pharmaceuticals Nasal Sprays
Ferring makes several nasal sprays to treat a range of medical issues. Under the recall, multiple Ferring products pose a potential threat to their users. These products have several brand names, including Ferring, Amring, CSL Behring.
DDAVP Nasal Spray
Is an antidiuretic replacement to manage central cranial diabetes insipidus. It is also used to manage temporary polyuria and polydipsia after a head injury or brain surgery.
Desmopressin Acetate Nasal Spray
Is another antidiuretic replacement nasal spray. Uses are similar to those for DDAVP.
STIMATE Nasal Spray
Used to treat patients with hemophilia A with Factor VIII coagulant greater than 5%. Patients with Willebrand’s disease (Type I) might use STIMATE.
High Levels Of Desmopressin
The FDA calls the higher levels of desmopressin in these products “superpotency.” These extremely high levels cause hyponatremia.
Risk Of Hyponatremia
The medical term for low sodium levels in the blood is hyponatremia. Hyponatremia can lead to seizures, coma, and death. Anyone taking recalled nasal sprays should continue to take them as directed. But, it is urgent to talk to your doctor as soon as possible.
If you experience symptoms of desmopressin overdose, definitely seek emergency medical attention. But, you might have grounds for a compensation claim.
