What Is Bard PowerPort?
Bard PowerPort is a surgically implanted catheter device. The device allows for easier delivery of medications, nutrition, and treatments directly into the bloodstream through a small tube under the surface of the skin. This device can also make it easier for blood withdrawals.
Beckton, Dickenson and Company makes Bard PowerPort. The device is implanted below the skin with a catheter tube inserted into a blood vessel. The FDA approved the first PowerPort device in the year 2000. Since then, there have been small changes and modifications to the design.
Defective Design
The PowerPort catheter has a problem, either in the design or manufacturer that has caused serious complications – and even death – for some patients. When compared to similar products, the Bard PowerPort has a higher rate of failure.

Breakage
The catheter tubing is known to crack and break. This can lead to leaks, infections, and small pieces of tubing passing to other areas of the body.
Migration
When the small pieces of tubing move to other parts of the body, this is called ‘migration.’ Migration of the small pieces of tubing can cause blockage and/or damage to the heart.
Serious Infection
Infections and sepsis are problems experienced by patients. Serious infections require extensive medical treatment.
Blood Clots
Blood clots and deep vein thrombosis are serious complications. Clots and DVT can lead to pulmonary embolism, heart attack, kidney failure, and more.
Additional Problems
When a person has or needs a port catheter device, they already have some serious health issue(s). Even minor issues have the capacity to cause serious harm to an already weakened patient.
Bard PowerPort Recall
In March 2020, the FDA required Bard to recall certain defective PowerPort devices. The recall ended in May 2022. However, any patients harmed by a Bard PowerPort device may be eligible to file a claim for compensation.
