Allergan Breast Implant Cancer
Breast implant surgery is the most popular cosmetic procedure. In 2018, more than 300,000 women had breast augmentation surgery. Additionally, there are few risks with the procedure. But a new recall on textured breast implant products changed that. The FDA warns women of possible Allergan breast implant cancer risks.

Textured Breast Implant Cancer
Breast implant maker, Allergan, issued a worldwide recall of certain textured implants. Specifically, their Biocell implants used in reconstruction surgery. Regulators found a direct link to Allergan’s textured breast implants and cancer.
Specific Type Of Cancer
The textured implants do not cause breast cancer. But, Allergan implants cause lymphoma in the scar tissue around the implant. This cancer is called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma. It is slow-growing cancer, treated by removing the implant. The FDA reports their study shows other brand implants do not cause this cancer.
Textured Breast Implant Cancer
As of July 2019, there are 570 confirmed cases of this lymphoma. Of those cases, 80% have a direct link to Allergan breast implants. The risk with Allergan Biocell implants is six times higher than other manufacturer’s implants.

Breast Implant Cancer Risk
Anyone with an Allergan breast implant has an increased risk of getting this cancer. Some estimates state 1 in 3,000 patients will get this lymphoma. Others believe the numbers are closer to 1 in 30,000.
What To Do
Allergan breast implant cancer is not guaranteed. But, you have a higher risk of cancer. If you have Allergan implants, talk to your doctor. The FDA does not recommend removing the implants unless there is a problem.
Medical Implant Recall
